The Lighthouse Inn Bed and Breakfast
The Lighthouse Inn Bed and Breakfast is gracefully situated in the charming and Historic neighborhood of Fort Screven, on the picturesque North end of the three-mile island of Tybee Island in the beautiful state of Georgia.
Originally built in 1910, this enchanting property served as the officers’ quarters for Fort Screven. The Fort itself was established in 1855 to provide crucial seacoast defense against potential threats. It played a significant role as troops diligently guarded Tybee Island during momentous periods of history, such as the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II.
The fort officially closed its doors in 1947, and the historic buildings were subsequently sold to the Town of Tybee. Since that time, this storied location has been home to numerous Tybeans each contributing to its vibrant and evolving history. Across the street lies the beloved Bakery for the Fort, while a bit further down the block, one can find the nostalgic cafeteria that catered to the needs of those stationed here. The officers enjoyed their own private housing, in stark contrast to the enlisted men who were accommodated in crowded bunks.
Over the years, this remarkable building transitioned through various roles and functions, evolving from the Lieutenant’s residence to becoming a cherished home for a chaplain, a band leader, and numerous others. Throughout its rich and colorful history, it has been meticulously updated and remodeled by various homeowners, each bringing their unique vision of what would be aesthetically pleasing or best suited for their families. In circa 1997, the dedicated couple of Sewart and Susi Liles purchased the property and lovingly transformed it into The Lighthouse Inn. Following a rigorous and thorough renovation in 2017, the Inn saw the delightful addition of a splendid swimming pool, further enhancing its allure and providing an inviting space for relaxation and leisure.
